Ice Painting Video

Ice Painting
HD Video, time variable, loop, no sound 2020
Installation shot, PS2 Short Residency, Belfast, 2021

The video called Ice Painting shows the patterns created by melting ice (made from sea water from Kenmare Bay) placed on a board painted with oil paint. The result is a hypnotic development of shapes.
At the exhibition the video work can be connected with the audience by a system of motion detectors which would gently influence the playback speed of my video. The ice will gently melt quicker when a viewer enters the room or when there is movement. Without movement (the visitor pauses to watch) the video will slow down, and changes will be glacial.

The audience thus becomes a part of my work. Through the impact the viewer has on the speed of the ice melt- ing I hope to inspire the audience to think about the strong connections we all carry and the influence we have on our planet.

The work was realised thanks to the support of South Dublin County Council.
