In Search of Presence at Grilse Gallery, Ireland

In Search of Presence, Grilse Gallery, Killorglin, Ireland. Photograph by Dave Ryan Media.

In Search of Presence is a site-specific installation created in collaboration with water, exploring the tension between merging into a space and gently intervening in it. The installation consists of six large-scale Water Drawings applied directly to the walls, with charcoal drawings on the gallery surfaces carrying the flow of water across the space. The work evolves continuously as I extend the drawings further into the gallery over the course of the exhibition. The charcoal for the drawings was made from branches found in the Town Park in Killorglin, including elm. The Irish name for the River Laune, which flows next to the gallery, is ‘‘An Leamhain’, derived from the Old Irish for ‘elm tree’.
